When I regained my consciousness I found myself in the middle of the dark wood. Two roads diverged in front of me and I took one that was rugged and steep.
My decision was not a fast one. It was my whole life to that very point that had taken me there. That was just another test, another diversion. I have seen such crossroads many times, and there were always two choices. One of them was a steep path, full of rocks and edges, almost like a cliff just by how steep it was. The other was a colourful path, filled with fairy-tale like flora and fauna. The myriad of colours was very inviting, but I did not give in to temptation. Apart from the obvious difference of visual effect the two roads had, there was one more thing which could have been overlooked easily. The colourful path ended there. It looked like an enchanted forest, but one could not see anything beyond the trees. In fact, that was the end of that path. On the other hand, the rugged path did not end there. The almost cliff-side road did not have a foreseeable end. The sight of it was daunting, yet inviting. I guess that is the power of enigma. The mystery and uncertainty was what made me choose it, as always.
I guess I was brought up like that. Not by my parents specifically but more by the stories, tales, myths and legends, and such, which were engraved in my mind from a very young age. All the heroes choose the hard path, not an easy one. I think that they did it for honour or something as such, but I do not have that. That is not my reason for taking the hard road. It is just that every one of those heroes had a smile on their face at the end of the path. It was as if they had a world in their hands and feared nothing, as if they found something there, something that could not be expressed in words. I wish to obtain such a thing. The mystery of it is what is driving me forward; it is my dream.
Eventually, I neither know what awaits me at the end, nor who I will become by the end of it. However, I will not falter. I will seize this dream; I will feel as if the world is in my hands. For that purpose I will not give in to temptation and take the other path, although it is always there, on the periphery of my vision, creeping on to me, waiting for me to give up.
