Usually when we say the word love we think of something or someone we love. I could write another corny story about love how it is beautiful, magical, how you cannot live without it, but why constantly talk about the same things. No, let’s talk about what happens when that beautiful love is limited by something you cannot control.
Think! If you have just died, right now, if you have been on your death bed right now, and all of your ambitions, hopes and dreams are around you and you looking at them feeling sorry that you could not have made them happen because of something that was out of your control. Not long ago I watched a movie called “The Fault in Our Stars”. It is a love story between a young girl, Hazel Grace, who has lung cancer and a young man, Augustus Waters, who was left without a part of his leg because of cancer, too. It is not a typical love story movie, it makes you think about life and it makes you not fear love, like most people fear it. There was one specific thing that caught my eye. The boy, Augustus, had this metaphor. He would put a cigarette in his mouth but he would never light it. When I first saw it I did not understand it. Why would you just hold a cigarette in your mouth like that? I thoughthe was trying to be cool or something but after he explained, it made sense. He said to Hazel:“You put the killing thing between your teeth, but you never give it the power to kill you.” I totally understand why Hazel fell in love with Gus, he is really smart for a guy his age and surprisingly positive. However, she knew her time was limited so she did not want to let Gus fall for her, but she could not stop him. Before you knew it, he fell in love with her. It is amazing to me how they knew what their destiny was, they knew how it was all going to end, but yet they lived their lives with a positive attitude towards it, in love with each other and they lived it to the fullest. They were together for about a month after Augustus found out that the cancer came back and it was all over his inner organs. It was just a matter of weeks when he would die. Gus was the most positive, cool and lovable person I have ever known, the only thing that he was afraid as he said was infinity. Hazel and Gus fell in love within few weeks and it was broken up in a few days. I don’t see how it is fair that some people have a chance for love and they just dismiss it, they disrespect love. They have one night stands, they cheat, they destroy the one thing that is supposed to bring us closer to each other and closer to God, and still get million chances for love. But when true love happens to good people it may be interrupted by something that may be out of one’s control. Hazel and Gus let themselves love each other, no matter whether he was about to die. They allowed themselves to love to infinity. It makes me mad when I hear people say: “Love is not worth the pain.” It is more than worth it! Like one singer oncesaid love is not everything you want, but it is everything you need, it is not always about the happy end but, on the other hand, it is not the end that is sweet. If people cannot see anything beautiful about love they should get a better mirror and look a little closer and realize it will make you beautiful and it will make you a better you.
In conclusion, Gus and Hazel taught me to live in the present and live life to the fullest, (no matter how much time you do have on this earth). I once heard a man say that your worth surpasses all material things regardless of who you think you are. Whether you are a model in a magazine or you model pottery with grandma, whether you’re on the hot list or the not list, whether you love yourself or you cannot stand to look yourself in the mirror. The reality is, in my opinion, that everyone deserves someone who would give them infinity of love!
